The Problem: Dog Overpopulation and Euthanasia Crisis

Every year, over 3 million dogs are euthanized in the United States due to overpopulation. Yavapai County is no exception. This crisis begins with well-meaning but unprepared owners adopting unfixed dogs. Accidental pregnancies result in more unwanted litters, continuing the cycle of overpopulation.

Many puppies born into these situations lack essential veterinary care, including:

✔ Four rounds of vaccinations
✔ Six rounds of worming
✔ Rabies vaccination
✔ DNA typing for better training and behavior development
✔ Socialization with other dogs at crucial stages
✔ Microchipping for identification
✔ Basic obedience training

This level of care costs approximately $400 per puppy and $250 per mother—a cost many owners cannot afford.

Our Solution: The Last Litter Program

Our Last Litter Program (www.petsreturnhome.org/last-litter) prevents unwanted litters, saves puppies, and keeps families together.

How It Works:

  • For the Mother Dog: We provide spaying, vaccinations, and microchipping—all free of charge to the owner. This eliminates unplanned pregnancies, maintains the mother's health, and prevents future litters.

  • For Puppies Under Six Weeks Old: The mother and puppies come to our nursery facility, where the puppies receive full medical care, training, and socialization. The owner is welcome to visit the mother and puppies anytime.

  • For Puppies Over Six Weeks and Under Four Months: The puppies enter our nursery program while the mother dog receives her spay, vaccinations, and microchipping—all at no cost to the owner.

This program ensures every puppy receives the proper medical and behavioral care, increasing their chances of finding a loving, permanent home.
